# How customers choose options

> How customers include optional items, pick from multiple-choice groups and change quantities, and how their choices reach you.

If your quote includes optional items, multiple-choice groups or editable quantities, the customer can tailor it before accepting. You set these up in the editor; see [Optional, multiple-choice and editable-quantity items](https://quoterium.com/help/writing-quotes/optional-and-multiple-choice-items).

## What the customer can do

- **Optional items** are labelled "Optional" with a checkbox. Ticking adds the item; unticking removes it.
- **Multiple-choice groups** are headed "Choose one · or none". The customer picks one option with its round button. Clicking the chosen option again leaves the group with no choice.
- **Editable quantities** have a quantity box. The customer types the number they need.

Unselected items stay visible in a lighter grey, so the customer can change their mind.

## Live totals

Every change updates the line totals, subtotals, tax, total, recurring amounts and payment milestones straight away. The bar at the bottom shows the new total and how many options are selected, for example "3 of 5 options". Screen readers announce the new total too.

## When choices are saved

Choices are only saved when the customer accepts. If they leave the page without accepting, the next visit starts from your defaults again. When they accept:

- their choices and quantities become part of the accepted quote;
- the totals and payment milestones are recalculated to match;
- the acceptance dialog shows the total they are accepting.

Once a quote is accepted, declined or expired, the choices can no longer be changed.

## Seeing what they chose

Open the accepted quote: the items show the customer's selections and quantities, and the totals match what they accepted. In the PDF, optional items are marked "Optional · included" or "Optional · not included", and multiple-choice items "Selected option" or "Option".
