# Your first quote, step by step

> A quick walk-through: start a quote, choose the customer, add items, check the totals and preview, then send it.

This walk-through takes you from a blank page to a sent quote in a few minutes. Every step is covered in more detail elsewhere in the help centre.

1. **Start the quote.** Click **New quote** at the top of any page. Choose a template such as **Standard quote**, or **Empty quote** to start from nothing. The quote opens in the editor with its own number.
2. **Choose the customer.** Under **Prepared for**, type a name or email address and pick the contact. If they are new, choose **New contact**, fill in their **First name**, **Last name** and **Email** (all required) and their **Company / client**, and click **Create contact**. The contact's company is shown as the customer, with the person beneath it.
3. **Give it a title.** Click the large title at the top and type, for example, "Website redesign".
4. **Write the introduction.** Templates usually start with a text item. Click into it and write a few lines for your customer.
5. **Add what you are quoting for.** Edit the example item or use **+ Price item** below the items. Type a heading (matching items from your library appear as you type), a description, the **Qty** and the **Unit price**.
6. **Check the totals.** The **Totals** panel on the right updates as you go. Use the **Settings** tab to change the currency, tax mode, how customers see prices or the expiry date.
7. **Preview it.** Open the **Preview** tab to see the quote as your customer will.
8. **Send it.** Click **Preview & send**, check the email on the left, then click **Send now**.

There is no need to save as you work: the editor saves automatically and shows **Saved**, **Unsaved** or **Saving…** next to the buttons. If it shows **Not saved**, click **Try again**.

## What happens next

The quote's status changes to **Sent**. You will see when the customer opens it, and you get an email when they ask a question, accept or decline. If they do not respond, the quote appears under **Worth a follow-up** on your dashboard.
