# Passwords and signing in

> How signing in works, how to choose and change your password, how password resets work, and how to sign out on a shared computer.

## Signing in

You sign in with your email address and password. One login works for every organisation you belong to; you arrive in the organisation you used last and can switch from the account menu. See [Work with several organisations](https://quoterium.com/help/getting-started/multiple-organisations).

To keep guessing out, sign-in allows 10 attempts a minute for each email address from one IP address (and 60 a minute from one IP address whatever the addresses tried), and creating accounts or accepting invitations 5 every 10 minutes. Over the limit, the page says **Too many attempts**: wait a minute or two and try again.

## Choosing a password

Passwords must be at least 8 characters long. Longer is better: a passphrase of several unrelated words, or a password generated by a password manager, is much harder to guess. Don't reuse a password you use elsewhere.

## Changing your password

1. Go to [**Settings → Your profile**](https://app.quoterium.com/settings/profile).
2. Under **Change password**, enter your **Current password**, then the **New password** and **Confirm new password**.
3. Choose **Change password**.

## Resetting a forgotten password

Use **Forgot?** on the sign-in page. We email a reset link that works once and expires after one hour. The page always says the same thing whether or not an account exists for that address, so it can't be used to find out who uses Quoterium. See [Forgotten password](https://quoterium.com/help/troubleshooting/forgotten-password).

## Signing out

You stay signed in on a device until you sign out or your session expires. On a shared or public computer, always sign out when you finish: open the account menu (your initials, top right) and choose **Sign out**.

## Changing your email address

Your sign-in email can't be changed in the app. [Contact support](https://quoterium.com/support) and we'll help.

## If you think someone else has used your account

Change your password straight away, then [contact support](https://quoterium.com/support). If you are an admin and a colleague's account is affected, you can remove them from the organisation under [**Settings → Team**](https://app.quoterium.com/settings/team) while it is sorted out.
