# An exchange rate looks wrong

> Why a converted price may differ from the rate you expected: reference rates, margins, fixed rates, rounding and the date the quote was priced.

If a quote in another currency doesn't show the figures you expected, one of these is usually the reason.

## The rate is a reference rate

Quoterium uses the European Central Bank's daily reference rates. They are published once each working day, so at weekends and on bank holidays the latest published rate is used. They are mid-market rates, so they won't match the rate your bank or card provider charges.

## Your organisation adds a margin or uses a fixed rate

Under [**Settings → Currencies & rates**](https://app.quoterium.com/settings/currencies), each currency can have a **Margin %** added on top of the daily rate, or a **Fixed rate** that replaces it. The **Effective rate** column shows the rate actually used. See [Exchange rates and margins](https://quoterium.com/help/currencies-and-rates/exchange-rates-and-margins).

## Prices are rounded

If a **Price rounding** is set under [**Settings → Quote defaults**](https://app.quoterium.com/settings/quote-defaults), or in the quote's currency dialog, converted prices are rounded to the nearest 1, 5, 10, 50 or 100. A price that looks "off" by a few units is often rounding.

## The quote keeps the rate it was priced with

A quote stores the rate and date at the moment it was priced, when it was created or its currency was changed. It doesn't follow the market afterwards, so the price your customer sees stays put. The quote's **Settings** tab shows the rate, its date and any rounding, for example "1 GBP = 1.1650 EUR · rate of 9 Oct 2026".

To re-price at today's rate, open the quote's **Settings** tab and choose **Refresh rate** (or **Reset to today's rate** if a rate was entered by hand). This is only possible while the quote is a draft or offline for editing. See [Multi-currency quotes](https://quoterium.com/help/currencies-and-rates/multi-currency-quotes).

## Client page figures

Totals on client pages are converted to your base currency using each quote's stored rate, so they stay consistent with what was quoted.
