# Create a quote

> Start a quote from scratch or from a template, choose the company and the people it goes to, and add terms, notes, payment terms and private notes.

Every quote starts with the **New quote** button. You can find it in the header of every page and on each client's page. When the [Quotes](https://app.quoterium.com/quotes) list is narrowed to one client, the page also has **New quote for** that client.

## Start the quote

1. Click **New quote**.
2. Choose **Empty quote** to start from nothing, or pick one of your templates. Your default template is marked **Default**.

The quote opens in the editor straight away, with its own number (for example Q-42) and an expiry date based on how many days your quotes are valid for. A quote started from a template copies the template's items, terms, notes, payment schedule and attachments. An empty quote picks up the default terms, notes and payment schedule from **Settings → Quote defaults**.

When you start a quote from a client's page and the client has a preferred quoting currency, the quote starts in that currency. Otherwise it uses the template's currency, or your default currency for an empty quote. See [Quoting in other currencies](https://quoterium.com/help/currencies-and-rates/multi-currency-quotes).

## Choose who it is for

1. Under **Prepared for**, type a name or email address and pick the contact.
2. If the person is not in Quoterium yet, choose **New contact**. The full contact form opens with what you typed already filled in. **First name**, **Last name** and **Email** are required (marked **REQUIRED**); choose their **Company / client** if they have one, then click **Create contact**.

The main contact's company becomes the customer and is shown in large type, with the person beneath it. The quote's company always follows its main contact: to change the company, change the contact's company with **Edit contact** (without leaving the quote), or pick a different contact with **Change contact**. A main contact with no company makes a quote for that person alone. If Xero is connected, Xero contacts appear in the search too; picking one adds it to Quoterium. See [Link clients and contacts to Xero](https://quoterium.com/help/clients-and-contacts/link-clients-to-xero).

To send the quote to more people, use the **Add another recipient…** box under **Also send to**. Each recipient gets their own link. A **New contact** added here starts on the quote's company. The quote itself is addressed to the company and the main contact; the others are listed apart under **Also sent to**, with their company when it's a different one. **Edit contact** corrects their details, **Make primary** makes them the main contact (and the quote follows their company); **Remove** takes them off the quote.

Private notes saved on the client or contact are copied into the quote's private notes when the quote is created.

## Title and details

Click the large title at the top to name the quote. **Details** shows the date (filled in when you first send), the **Valid until** date and the owner. Change these on the **Settings** tab; see [Quote settings, dates and expiry](https://quoterium.com/help/writing-quotes/quote-settings-and-dates).

## Content

Add price items, text items and subtotals; see [Price items](https://quoterium.com/help/writing-quotes/price-items) and [Text items and subtotals](https://quoterium.com/help/writing-quotes/text-items-and-subtotals). Below the items you can add:

- **+ Add terms & conditions** and **+ Add notes**: rich text blocks shown at the end of the quote. Their headings can be renamed, and **Remove** clears them.
- **+ Add payment terms & milestones**: see [Payment terms and milestones](https://quoterium.com/help/payments-and-xero/payment-milestones).
- **Private notes**: for your team only, never shown to the customer.
- **Attachments**: files listed at the bottom of the quote. See [Formatting, images and attachments](https://quoterium.com/help/writing-quotes/rich-text-images-and-attachments).

## Saving

The editor saves automatically a moment after each change and shows **Saved**, **Unsaved**, **Saving…** or **Not saved**; after **Not saved**, click **Try again**. There is no Save button. Leaving the page saves any pending changes first.
