Tax and how customers see prices

Choose whether prices include or exclude tax, set tax per item, and decide how much pricing detail the customer sees.

Tax modes

On the quote's Settings tab, Tax sets how tax works for the whole quote:

  • Added to prices: unit prices are before tax; tax is added on top.
  • Included in prices: unit prices already include tax; the tax is worked out from them and shown as "included".
  • No tax: no tax is calculated and the tax column is switched off.

New quotes take the tax mode from their template, or from Tax in Settings → Quote defaults.

Tax on each item

Each price item has a Tax drop-down with your organisation's tax rates, plus No tax. New items use your default rate. Tax is calculated line by line, rounded to two decimal places, then added up. The label shown to customers (for example VAT or GST) is the Tax label in Quote defaults. Admins manage rates in Settings → Tax & categories; see Tax rates and sales categories.

How customers see prices

Also on the Settings tab, How customers see prices controls the detail on the customer page and PDF:

SettingThe customer sees
Prices, quantities and totalsQuantity, unit price and total for every line, plus the totals and payment amounts.
Totals onlyEach line's total and the quote totals, but not quantities or unit prices.
Quantities onlyQuantities, but no prices or totals.
Hide all pricingNo quantities, prices, totals or payment milestones.

Tick Show item codes to show each item's code to the customer, and to show the Code field in the editor.

You always see full pricing in the editor. Check the Preview tab to see what the customer will see.
